Key Largo

Blackwater Sound

Blackwater Sound is a shallow, sheltered dive area on the Florida Keys’ mangrove shoreline. The site comprises seagrass flats and patchy hardbottom near the mangrove edge, offering calm conditions and easy entry from nearby docks or shore. Depths are typically shallow, making it suitable for beginner and snorkel-grade training dives, while experienced divers can explore the nearby drop-offs and sheltering channels at modest depths. Common Gulf of Mexico species associated with Florida Keys habitats—groupers, snapper, moray eels, parrotfish, octopus, and a variety of tropical reef fish—may be seen in the area around sea grasses and limestone pavements. Currents are usually light, visibility can vary with weather, and local boat traffic requires awareness during planning. Access from Key Largo is convenient, with several boats and local dive operations offering guided trips to this sheltered site.
