Cirkewwa Reef

Cirkewwa Reef is a sheltered drift-friendly reef site off the northwest coast of Malta, typically visited from the Mellieħa–Għajnsielem area. The reef runs close to the drop-off along a shallow to moderate depth gradient, with entry from a sandy terrace and a gentle exit over restitutioned sand and rubble. Expect clear Mediterranean visibility, often ranging from good to excellent, and water temperatures that vary seasonally. The area supports a healthy assemblage of typical Malta reefs: balding groupers, amberjacks, moray eels, octopus, cuttlefish, and a variety of wrasse and damselfish, with resident crustaceans and sea urchins on the lower reefs. The site’s structure features small swim-throughs and crevices, making it suitable for intermediate divers; currents can develop along the edge of the reef, so plan for a drift if conditions allow. Nearby access from the three closest towns makes it a popular, reliable choice for a half-to-full day of diving.
