Scuba diving in South Africa spans two oceans and several distinct water types, so conditions can vary a lot by coast. The Indian Ocean side and the Mozambique Channel area (including KwaZulu-Natal) tend to be warmer, with more temperate-to-warm conditions depending on season. South Africa is also known for shark encounters in some coastal areas, plus a mix of wrecks and reef diving suitable for a range of certifications. Inland, freshwater options exist but are more niche, such as Umpangazi (lake) and Sundays River (river), which are typically less predictable than the coast.
