Western Cape, along the South Atlantic Ocean, is a major scuba area in South Africa thanks to its cold-to-temperate upwelling coastline and easy access to boat trips. Divers commonly find rocky reefs, kelp habitats, sandy bottoms and offshore topography, with visibility that varies by season and current strength. Around Simon’s Town and the Cape Peninsula, dives often include kelp-covered areas and deeper slopes accessible by charter. Further west and along the Overberg and Saldanha Bay region, conditions can shift between cooler, clearer days and more changeable water depending on winds and upwelling. Marine life is typically associated with the Benguela-influenced ecosystem, including kelp-associated fish and seasonal visitors; sightings vary widely by month.
