Kawaihae

Kawaihae is a small coastal town on the northwestern edge of the Big Island of Hawaii. It isn’t a major diving hub, but it sits near accessible dive spots along the Kona coast and along the Kohala and Waianae sides of the island. Local divers typically use nearby shoreline sites and small boat trips launched from larger harbors on Hawaii Island. The area offers calm conditions in favorable weather windows, with typical reef and rocky-bottom habitats nearby and occasional marine life such as turtles and reef fish. For serious diving, divers usually travel to better-known Kona or Hilo-area sites with more centers and a wider choice of boat trips, but Kawaihae can serve as a gateway if you’re based in the area and want short, local excursions or a starting point for exploring the island’s diverse diving options.
