Portbou

Portbou is a small coastal town on Spain’s Mediterranean side in Catalonia, near the French border. It’s mainly a gateway to nearby coastal and headland dive areas along the Costa Brava rather than a large dive hub by itself. Divers typically plan short boat or shore dives from local access points, depending on conditions, with visibility and swell influenced by the sea state. As with much of the area, expect rocky ground, crevices, and typical Mediterranean reef species rather than extensive sandy bottoms. If you’re looking for freshwater diving, Banyoles Lake is in the region but it’s not an immediate city option—most trips require a longer drive and planning with dive operators familiar with the site.
