Shimoda is a coastal city in Japan known as a gateway to the Izu Peninsula’s dive scene. It offers access to nearby coastal dive sites along the Pacific, with a small number of local dive centers catering to visitors. Expect typical temperate coastal conditions, kelp and rocky reefs nearby, and straightforward boat or shore dives suitable for entry to intermediate divers. The city itself is more of a cultural and historical stopover, while nearby shores and sheltered bays provide access to local dive sites and freshwater options in the broader region, such as Lake Hinuma for training or dry-season practice away from the sea.
