San Carlos Beach
San Carlos Beach is a sheltered, beginner-friendly shore dive site in Monterey Bay. The site offers easy entry from the beach with a gentle sandy slope transitioning to rocky bottom and a variety of shallow reef-like structures. Typical visibility is variable and commonly ranges from comfortable to moderate, depending on waves and runoff. Expect a mix of kelp, small bass, damselfish, gobies, and sea stars along the inner reef zones, with occasional leopard sharks and pelagic visitors further offshore in the bay. Currents are usually mild, making it suitable for new divers or those practicing buoyancy and entry techniques. Access is straightforward from Montery-area shore facilities, and many divers pair this site with nearby wrecks and reef dives along Monterey Bay for a full day of local diving.
