Russia offers scuba diving mainly along its long coasts (Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland, and the far-eastern seas such as the Japan/East Sea) plus inland freshwater diving in large lakes like Ladoga and Onega. Conditions are often cold water, with lower temperatures for much of the year, which affects comfort and dive planning (dry suits are common in colder regions). Visibility can vary a lot by season and site, and currents can be stronger around exposed coastal areas. Arctic and subarctic regions are more niche due to extreme conditions and limited season length. Compared with the most popular global reef destinations, Russia is more “adventure and exploration” focused, with fewer easy, year-round options and longer travel distances between dive areas.
