Peru is a Pacific-coast diving country, with sites concentrated along the shoreline of Lima and the northern regions around Piura and Talara. Most diving is in the ocean, usually on rocky coastlines where currents from the Humboldt system can bring nutrients and strong marine activity, but can also affect comfort and visibility. Water temperatures vary a lot by season and latitude, and conditions can change quickly, so plan for colder, more current-exposed dives than in tropical destinations. Expect a mix of kelp/rocky habitats, schooling fish, and other coastal species; visibility is best when surface conditions are calmer. Dive boats and day trips are common near popular coastal towns, but overall variety and frequency of diving operations are more limited than in major reef-based destinations.
