Mayotte is an overseas department of France in the Indian Ocean, with diving mainly focused on the lagoon and the surrounding coastal waters around the islands. Expect warm tropical water, coral habitats close to shore, and conditions that can change quickly with wind and swell. Visibility is often best when seas are calm, making lagoon dives a practical option for many certification levels. Outside the lagoon, sites are generally more exposed to currents associated with the Mozambique Channel, so a local guide is important for safe planning.
