Kenya is a go-to scuba destination for anyone planning diving along the Indian Ocean coast. Most diving is based around Mombasa and the south coast (including Diani/Kinondo area in Kwale County) and the wider Kilifi coast, where the seabed ranges from shallow sandy slopes to reef patches and deeper drop-offs. Water is warm year-round compared with many temperate destinations, and conditions are typically best when seas are calmer. Divers commonly encounter coral and reef fish, with larger pelagics appearing seasonally depending on currents and temperature. The country is also known for encounters with whale sharks and manta rays in the right seasons, but sightings are never guaranteed. Inland freshwater diving is limited compared with the marine offering, so most trips focus on coastal boats and day sessions from dive centers.
