Austria is a landlocked country, so scuba diving is mostly done in freshwater lakes in the Alpine and pre-Alpine regions rather than in open-ocean sites. Around areas such as the Attersee (Unterach am Attersee / Weißenbach am Attersee) and the Salzkammergut lakes (for example Ebensee), divers typically find lake conditions with cooler water than most coastal destinations, seasonal visibility changes, and simple shore-entry logistics depending on the site. Marine fauna and coral ecosystems are not part of the experience here; instead, lake diving is often about wrecks, submerged structures, and freshwater environments where buoyancy and cold-water comfort matter. For many travelers, Austria works best as a training-and-experience trip (check-out dives, specialty training, practice sessions), combined with easy logistics in established lake-diving areas.
