Sado is an island city in Niigata Prefecture, facing the Japan Sea. It’s a legitimate gateway for divers visiting the Sea of Japan area, with a couple of local dive centers offering shore and boat dives to nearby reefs, caves, and wreck sites around the island. While not as famous as tropical destinations, the area features temperate waters, decent visibility in summer, and marine life such as wrasse, flounder, and species typical of temperate Japan. Access can be via ferry from Niigata City, and whale watching is a common nearby activity. In short, Sado serves as a practical base for local dives, with limited onsite depth and a focus on nearby sea sites rather than high-volume offshore reefs.
