Ireland is a North Atlantic scuba destination with cold, temperate water and conditions that vary a lot by coast and season. Most diving is done in saltwater around the Celtic Sea, the Irish Sea, and exposed areas influenced by the North Atlantic, where you’ll typically find colder temperatures, occasional surge, and visibility that can range from modest to good after calmer weather. The highlights are often wrecks, rocky coasts, and kelp habitats (rather than warm-water reefs). On the freshwater side, Ireland has a smaller inland diving scene in lakes such as Kilkeran Lake, Lough Furnace, and Lough Melvin, with colder conditions and usually more variable visibility. If you like photography, wrecks, and cool-water marine life, Ireland can be a rewarding trip; just plan around weather and water temperature, and choose local centers that can match the day’s conditions to your level.
