Monterey

Monterey is a coastal city in California that serves as a gateway to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It offers access to organized shore dives and boat trips along the central California coast, with kelp forests, abundant marine life, and iconic wildlife like sea otters and harbor seals. The area is known for relatively cold water, strong currents at some sites, and variable visibility. A number of local centers provide courses, equipment rental, and guided dives; however, most diving is done a short drive away along the coastline or in nearby state marine areas rather than from the city itself. If you’re visiting for cuisine and scenery, you’ll still find a practical base for day trips to nearby dive sites and marine preserves.
