Atami

Atami is a coastal city in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, perched on the Pacific coast about an hour from Tokyo by train. It’s best known as a hot-spring resort town with a scenic coastline, but it is not a major diving hub. Local diving options exist nearby along the Sagami and Izu coasts, with a handful of centers offering shore and boat dives to shallow reefs, rocky walls, and occasional wrecks within easy day-trip reach from Atami. Water is typically temperate to warm in summer, visibility can vary, and marine life includes common temperate species such as wrasse, gobies, and small pelagics. Freshwater options are limited in the immediate area, with Lake Hinuma being a regional inland site not typically tied to Atami’s diving scene. When visiting, divers usually base themselves in larger nearby towns or along the Izu Peninsula for a broader choice of sites and services.
