Yakushima is a remote island off the southern coast of Kyushu, Japan. It’s known more for lush forests and hiking than for major on-island scuba diving. Access to diving is limited and most visitors focus on nature trails, hot springs, and the island’s endemic wildlife. Nearby dive options are available via day trips from larger ports on Kyushu or Kagoshima, including reef and pelagic sites accessible by boat from the region; however, diving in Yakushima itself is not a major draw. For divers, the island serves as a potential gateway to southern Japan’s coastal sites, with seasonal conditions and varying visibility.
