Santa Maria di Leuca sits at the heel of Italy's Apulia region, where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet. While the town is famed as a scenic coastal gateway and hiking spot, it's not a top dive hub. Nearby saltwater access exists along the southern Apulia coast for day trips to coastal Italian dive sites and wrecks, but formal diving activity is modest: a few local dive centers offer courses and guided shore and boat dives, mostly focused on coastal reefs and marine life typical of the central Mediterranean. For divers, the closest practical angle is using Leuca as a gateway to broader dive opportunities along the Ionian Sea and Salento coast, with water conditions generally temperate, visibility variable, and marine life including Mediterranean species such as groupers, amberjacks, and seagrass beds when conditions permit.
