Kalathas
The Cathdral
The Cathedral is a shallow, easy-access dive site near Chania, typically visited from Kalathas and nearby suburbs. The site features a collapsed tunnel-like rock formation that gives a sheltered, cathedral-like silhouette as you descend into about five to 15 meters of clear Mediterranean water. Entry is straightforward from a sandy/pebble bottom with gently shelving approaches. Expect calm conditions with good visibility in typical mid-Mantional conditions; marine life includes small groupers, wrasse, moray eels, and octopus, with posidonia meadows nearby. The site is suitable for beginners and for practice dives, as well as for macro photography in shallow sections. Currents are usually light, but always plan for local conditions and buoyancy control. Access is convenient from the Kalathas coast, within a few minutes drive of Kounoupidiana and Chorafakia.
