Helford
Helford River
Helford River is a shallow coastal site along the Cornish estuary system. The area includes sheltered waters with gently sloping seabed and soft sediment in parts, making it suitable for beginner divers and training dives when conditions allow. The river mouth and adjacent channels can offer gentle current and good visibility on calm days. Marine life is typical of southwest England estuaries, with a mix of small fish, crabs and flatfish, and occasional crustaceans near the banks. Access is straightforward from nearby villages, with divers often starting from Helford or the surrounding coasts and taking advantage of the estuary’s calm conditions for calm-water practice, shoreline exploration, and macro sightings in the muddy and sandy bottoms. The site is best planned with local dive guidance due to variable river turbidity and tidal influences.
