Switzerland is not a saltwater diving destination; most scuba diving happens in freshwater lakes in the Alps and pre-Alpine area. Bases around Lake Thun (near Gunten, Merligen, and Oberhofen am Thunersee) are a good example of the typical setup: clear inland water in calmer bays, boat entries in some areas, and seasonal changes that strongly affect visibility and water temperature. Conditions can be colder than divers expect, especially outside the summer months, and currents are usually limited compared with open water seas. Expect a mix of recreational dives focused on buoyancy and navigation, training-friendly sites, and local freshwater ecosystems rather than the reefs or wrecks commonly found in coastal destinations. If you’re planning a trip mainly for scuba, Switzerland works best for divers who enjoy lakes, controlled conditions, and the Alps’ scenery.
