Portugal is a solid year-round scuba option for Atlantic diving, with most activity along the mainland coast and in the Atlantic islands (especially Madeira). Divers commonly find temperate-to-cool water (often colder in winter), shifting visibility due to currents and plankton, and a coastline that supports rocky reefs, kelp and drift diving in the right conditions. The Azores and Madeira are the main places to expect more consistent water movement and varied underwater landscapes, while wrecks and artificial reefs are also part of the local offer near some bays and harbors. Inland freshwater diving exists via rivers, but it is not the main focus of most scuba trips. Expect equipment suited for cooler temperatures and good buoyancy control—conditions can change quickly with tides and wind.
