Malaysia is a strong scuba diving destination in Southeast Asia, mainly for warm tropical seas around the islands. On the east coast, divers often base themselves in Pahang and visit the marine areas near Tioman, while further north in Sabah the coastline and offshore islands (including Semporna) are known for rich reef habitats and frequent diving opportunities. Conditions are typically warm year-round, with visibility that can be excellent on many days, and dive sites ranging from shallow reef profiles to deeper drop-offs. Water types are mostly saltwater: the South China Sea, the Sulu Sea, and the Gulf of Thailand. Freshwater diving is limited compared with the extensive saltwater options, so most itineraries focus on coastal and island diving, including day trips and longer multi-day trips.
