French Polynesia is an ocean-only scuba destination, with most diving focused on island lagoons and passes on atolls. Around Tahiti (including Puna’auia and Teva I Uta), divers commonly find clear tropical water, coral gardens, and sheltered lagoon conditions that work well for a wide range of experience levels. Further out, atolls such as Hao offer more of the open-ocean feel: stronger currents are possible near passes, visibility can be very good, and dives often center on reef life in dramatic, wide-angle seascapes. Typical conditions are warm water year-round, with seasons affecting wind and current strength—so planning around local forecasts matters more than chasing “perfect” water temperature.
