Cuba is a Caribbean diving destination with saltwater options along both the north coast (North Atlantic influence) and the broader Caribbean Sea, plus Gulf of Mexico areas on the west and south-west. Most diving is reef-based, with good opportunities around coastal keys and cays, and many trips depart from well-known bases such as Varadero, Cayo Coco and Ciego de Ávila (Morón area), as well as Havana and other coastal towns. Conditions are typically warmer than inland waters, with visibility varying by weather and season; you’ll often plan dives around currents and surge, especially on exposed reef edges and channels. Expect a mix of tropical reef life and occasional wreck dives, depending on the area and local operators. Freshwater diving is limited here, so if you’re mainly looking for lakes and rivers, Cuba’s appeal is mostly coastal.
